Chapter Sixteen

Jo procrastinated about calling Macy because she knew she would have to agree a time to visit the office. Besides, she didn’t want to seem too eager for information, especially as she wasn’t certain that he was still willing to help her. The morning after the funeral, she decided to test out how things were between them.

‘Any news on Nathan?’ She was aiming to sound casual. Of course, this didn’t work. He knew her too well for that and as it was nine a.m. on a Saturday, it was not a likely time for a chatty call.

‘No, but it sounds like you have some.’

Jo was sitting in the car park at the college. Aoife’s staff meeting was not until ten a.m. but she’d been awake since five o’clock. The feeling of dread about Nathan hadn’t left her since the funeral, but she knew Macy would demand more evidence than that.

‘No, nothing at all,’ she said. ‘But it was Seb’s funeral yesterday and he wasn’t there.’

There was a pause in which she could hear someone speak in the background, a woman’s voice calling a question. Macy continued. ‘Wouldn’t expect him to be. He’s keeping out of sight until all the fuss dies down and if, for example, he wants to stay out of the way of the police, he would have expected they might be at the funeral—’

‘They weren’t there either,’ Jo interrupted, slightly irked by Macy’s superior manner. ‘It was a pretty small gathering and they’d have stuck out like a sore thumb. And I’m more and more convinced that people are not going to paint a true picture of Seb at the inquest on Monday. Nathan should have been called to give evidence to that. He could present a more balanced view of Seb. Do you think I should talk to the police about Nathan?’

‘I thought you’d tried that. Wasn’t that why you asked me to get involved?’

‘Yes, well, I have, but maybe I should try again. Things have moved on. I could tell them about the tarot cards—’ Jo was speculating out loud and didn’t even sound convincing to herself. ‘No, that’s probably not such a good idea.’

‘When you need me to take part in this conversation, can you just let me know?’ Macy said. ‘It’s just that I have to be somewhere.’ Again there was background noise and clatter like someone washing up. Jo tried to picture him in his old flat. She didn’t even know if he still lived there — nor if he still lived alone.

‘Of course, don’t let me hold you up. I’ll call you later,’ Jo said and ended the call with a frustrated sigh.

The pale limestone symmetry of the college looked almost ethereal in the morning sunshine as if the building was making a statement, representing a rural idyll. Looking up towards the shallow parapet, Jo was reminded of Nathan’s rooftop presentation. She found herself looking back on it through a different lens, more questioning and critical. As Jo walked up
